Charlottesville Ballet was founded in 2007 to provide a holistic, nurturing, professional environment to showcase both the emotional expression and technical prowess of talented dancers. Few ballet companies consciously wed health and professionalism, yet we feel these two ideas are not mutually exclusive. In the professional ballet world, dancers often suffer from eating disorders to maintain a competitive body weight and dance on preexisting injuries in order to keep their jobs. Although many of these issues are hidden behind the beauty of the art form, we believe there can be a better, healthier, and more effective approach to professional ballet. Charlottesville Ballet was originally founded as “Ma’at Ensemble;” Ma’at, the Egyptian word for truth and balance, helped define the ideals that the company continues to embrace. The company name has been changed, but we strive to create an environment of wholeness, balance, and freedom– for dancers, choreographers, musicians, and all who are a part of the organization. Now in its fifth performing season, Charlottesville Ballet intends to become an integral part of the Charlottesville community by giving eclectic live performances, by collaborating with local artists, and by offering community outreach throughout the region of Central Virginia.
