Virginia Trails: Fairfax County, Civil War Crossroads
The landscape of Fairfax County and all of Northern Virginia is dotted with Civil War sites associated with the Union Army's four-year occupation. Battles raged across all of Fairfax County, including incidents instigated by “The Grey Ghost” Confederate Colonel John S. Mosby and his Rangers. By the time the War Between the States ended, Northern Virginia was devastated by the four-year campaign. Starting with adjacent Manassas National Battlefield Park you can make your way through Fairfax County and experience Civil War history, its impact on the capital region, and the toll it took on everyday citizens. Sully Historic Site, The Freeman House and Museum, and The City of Fairfax Museum and Visitors Center are examples of sites that offer visitors a glimpse into the past with exhibits, walking tours and expert historians.
