Journey Through Hallowed Ground Presidential Tour
Visit the home Thomas Jefferson’s beloved Monticello in Charlottesville, Virginia, the southernmost point of the Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Heritage Area. Tour the home the “Father of the Constitution”, key champion and author of the United States Bill of Rights and fourth President of the United States, James Madison. Madison spent much of his life at his Montpelier Estate in Orange County, VA. The estate features the Madison mansion, historic buildings, exhibits, archaeological sites, gardens, forests, hands-on activities, a new Visitor Center, and a freedman's cabin and farm. Here, in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains, you can spend an hour or two—or a day or two—strolling the grounds, picnicking, and learning more about James Madison. Before departing for home, have lunch at Hazel River Inn, a survivor of the August 2011 Mineral earthquake. This corner brick building is reported to be the oldest commercial building in the Historic Downtown area and occupies part of Lot #35 on the 1759 plat of the Town of Culpeper, as surveyed by 16 year old George Washington for Lord Fairfax. The building is listed on The Virginia Register of Historic Places.
