Create, Participate, and Appreciate...The Arts in Fairfax County
Fairfax County’s immersive arts scene is an unexpected delight to visitors exploring the National Capital Region. Most galleries and performing arts venues often place barriers between the invited guests and the artists. With open studios, ongoing programs, and intimate performance venues located in some of the most welcoming and historic settings found anywhere in the country, Fairfax County’s artistic community is shattering this stereotype and inviting you to be part of the action.
Day 1- Start expressing your artistic freedom at The Workhouse Arts Center. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, this former correctional facility has a fascinating story involving the Women’s Suffragist movement and features over 150 of the region’s finest professional and emerging artists. Halls and rooms that were once filled with prisoners now flourish with artists’ studios where you are invited to ask questions, purchase their wares, and even participate in programs in which you can create your own masterpiece.
Day 2- One of the beautiful things about The Workhouse is the art doesn’t stop at the canvas. Classes and artists here specialize in just about everything imaginable! Culinary arts, dance, glass, fiber arts, ceramics and music are all featured, and you are encouraged to discover them all throughout the 55 acre campus.
Day 3- Next we invite you visit one of the over 50 vineyards in Northern Virginia, and select your favorite Virginia wine. Virginia has been recognized as “One of the Five Up-and-Coming Wine Regions in the World” by Travel Leisure Magazine and once you see the selections they offer you’ll see why. We suggest that you start at Fairfax County's own Paradise Springs Winery or The Winery at Bull Run...the two closest wineries to Washington DC. After getting your wine, the perfect place to pop your cork is at Wolf Trap, the country’s only National Park dedicated solely to the performing arts. During the summer months you can enjoy a wide array of music under the stars, while enjoying your own picnic dinner on the rolling hills overlooking the majestic Filene Center.
