Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge

Surrounded by the Occoquan and Potomac Rivers, this ecological treasure is a time capsule of natural habitats that are rare or nearly extinct in Northern Virginia. Visit this unique place to experience tidal shorelines, marshes, meadows, woods and all of the creatures that dwell on the banks of the Occoquan and Potomac Rivers. . The refuge is home to 650 plant species, 218 bird species, 55 butterfly species and robust wildlife communities. The Refuge is open to the public Thursdays through Sundays from 7am-7pm (excluding hours of darkness). Occoquan Bay offers an excellent opportunity for young and novice hunters to participate in annual whitetail deer managed hunt. After completing an application, hunters are randomly selected to participate.
