Dismal Swamp Canal Trail
The Dismal Swamp Canal Trail -- a multipurpose-use trail accommodating horse owners, bicyclists, walkers, joggers, and boat owners -- opened in Chesapeake, on April 18. The trail, actually the former U.S. RT. 17, is linear, running 8.5 miles along the Dismal Swamp Canal, which is the eastern edge of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Great Dismal Swamp Refuge. It is a nature and history devote's delight and an outdoor recreation playground for serious and casual outdoor recreation enthusiasts. Open sunrise to sunset.
