In the heart of historic Old Town Alexandria, is The Athenaeum. This beautiful Greek Revival building was constructed in 1851-52 and is on both the Virginia Trust and National Register of Historic Places. Aptly named after Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, The Athenaeum continues to serve its purpose of enriching the cultural life of Northern Virginia. Today it houses the gallery of the Northern Virginia Fine Arts Association and also features contemporary art exhibitions. The Athenaeum also serves as a center for dance performances.
