WWI Monument

This memorial was erected on July 4, 1924 to honor the 49 men of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County who died in service during World War I.

The centerpiece is a bronze statue of a seated woman (presumably Lady Liberty) casted by Charles Keck of New York.  The statue sits on a circular granite base inscribed:  "They tasted death in youth that Liberty might grow old."

The names of the serviceman are located on a scroll under her right arm.  Names of six local African American servicemen are on the lower right corner of the scroll.  They are Henry Arrington, Hamilton Brown, John Billhimer, John W. Newman, Earnest Williams, and Willie Washington.
