Quantico National Cemetery

Dedicated in 1983,  this beautiful National Cemetery consists of 725 rolling, wooded acres just to the west of interstate-95 at the Triangle exit.  Attracting increasing interest by visitors -- particularly during national holidays when its Memorial Pathway is girted by the sight of hundreds of flags -- the cemetery includes the burial sites of such notables as four-star general, Lewis William Walt, an original member of Edson's Raiders; and  World War II Marine combat photographer, Louis Lowery, who took the famous picture of the first U.S. flag raising atop Iwo Jima's Mt. Suribachi in 1945. Providing ultimate grave space for more than 350,000 interments, the site presently acts as the final resting place for over 8600 individuals.
