Path of History, Olde Towne Portsmouth
The "Path of History" is a string of historical sites in Portsmouth. Public parks serve as bookends to the Path, which links two of the nation's oldest Navy facilities the Naval Medical Center and the Naval Shipyard. A 1-acre park at the south end is adjacent to the Naval Shipyard. More than a dozen signs featuring key milestones in the Naval Shipyard's 240-year history are displayed, such as two 75,000-pound propellers from naval supply ships and a refurbished sail from a former submarine and Navy guns that were once used on vessels built there. The north end is the 3-acre Fort Nelson Park at the entrance to the nation's first Navy hospital. It is home to placards describing local history and a scattering of Navy artifacts, like warship guns and buoys. Named "Best New Facility" by the Va. Recreation & Park Society.
