Oak Ridge Estate
The mansion on this 5,000-acre plantation estate was first built in 1802 and acquired at the turn of the 20th century by Thomas Fortune Ryan, a Nelson County native who had become one of the 10 wealthiest men in the nation. He made impressive alterations to the building and grounds-adding a formal Italian garden, rotunda greenhouse and railroad station, among other features. Leisurely tours include the first floor of the mansion and sections of the grounds.
Oak Ridge Estate House Tours Open to the Public April 3, 2012 through October 25, 2012 Tuesday through Thursday each week with the first tour of the day starting at 10 a.m. and will continue to offer them every hour on the hour with the last tour of the day beginning at 3 p.m. Advance notice for large groups appreciated.
