James River Reserve Fleet

This "drive-by" attraction offers visitors an impressive sight in the James River.  100 to 110 ships represent this National Defense Reserve Fleet, commonly known as "The Ghost Fleet," that was established after WWI by the US Maritime Administration to provide additional navy and merchant ships in case of an emergency. These retired navy and merchant ships anchored here once carried cargo, missiles, rescue equipment, helicopters, satellite-tracking devices, and troops around the globe.
