Hatton Ferry
Hatton Ferry, the last hand poled ferry operating in the United States, runs on Saturdays from 9-5, and Sundays from Noon-5, mid April through mid October and by special appointment. A ride on the ferry is a unique opportunity to experience times past; ferries have served Albemarle and Buckingham Counties since the mid-eighteenth century, and provided a means by which European settlers could communicate with other settlers and establish commercial ventures. A small exhibit explores the history of the ferry, and visitors may ride across the river at no charge (although donations are execpted) if water levels permit. Hatton Ferry is located in southern Albemarle, five miles outside of Scottsville on Hatton Ferry Road. Call ahead for weather closures. Also, you can now check out the Hatton Ferry on Facebook for current conditions!
