Native Wildflowers of Virginia
Virginia native wildflowers are on display at the EJC Arboretum, a 125 acre native species wildflowers and trees preserve. No other arboretum in the country can boast a shale barren featuring seven of the 15-plus strict endemic species of obligate heliotropes, that make their homes only under the Devonian shale's extreme conditions. Native plants like yellow buckwheat, white-haired leather flower, ragwort, spike moss and hairy lipped ferns thrive in the shale barren. Find rare natives like pinxter flower, flame azalea, rose azalea, and others, some over 15 feet in height grow in the Mid Atlantic Chapter American Rhododendron Society garden established in 1996. Lady's slipper, several trillium varieties, native ferns, Dutchman's breeches, wild ginger, squirrel corn, are among many other native wildflowers preserved at the EJC Arboretum.
